Orange County is one of the prime areas of real estate in Southern California, where people take pride in their properties both due to the tremendous increases in real estate values over the course of the last few decades as well as simply because they enjoy living in an area that has the best weather in the country.  Orange County rarely goes below freezing or above 90°, which ultimately means that if you were to provide artificial water sources to almost any plant you can make it grow successfully.  This is why so many people have transformed their own landscapes in Orange County into tropical paradises, with large areas of green grass and many plants that only grow in the tropics.  We must understand is that this is not the natural landscape for this area, and ultimately the need to supply water to these plants illustrates that they could not grow here on their own.  While there is nothing wrong with transforming the landscape into what you want it to be on your own property, we must consider that when our actions potentially have a negative impact on the environment we must rethink our decisions.  That this is not necessarily the discussion that involves plants that can be used to provide food for people, but realistically the discussion must be had around plants that have no value except in a decorative sense.  When people choose to put these types of plants into their environment and there is a potential that the water that must be used in order to keep them alive would be more appropriately used for people or animals, we must think about this action being necessary to potentially educate against.  This has become the case in Southern California as drought conditions create a situation where water shortages that could potentially cause people to have to go without this critical resource simply do to the fact that others are wasting it watering landscapes that serve no purpose except decoration.  We must always prioritize people and animals over decorative plants, and when watering restrictions cause our grass to go brown and dry, it is simply the price that we must pay in order to be members of this community.  A better idea the next time that watering restrictions cause your land to become damaged, is to plant no additional grass or water loving plants to once the restrictions have been lifted.  Instead, use this as an opportunity to install a far smarter idea that will not only benefit you but also helps our environment.  Fake grass does not need water in order to maintain its green look, ultimately keeping the same look no matter how bad the drought situation becomes.  This is far better for Orange County in that it will continue only conserve water through the good times and bad, and even when that drought conditions become severe there will be no need to worry about your property looking bad.
